I don't care how cheesy this sounds: I BENT OVER BACKWARDS FOR THIS!
Okay. This took me over 40 hours to complete and I my hands were so sore I couldn't pick up a soda can. Most of the work was within the three days before it was due so there were a few 12 hour days in the studio. XD My staff, residents, friends and boyfriend saw me when I was leaving and going to bed.
This piece was also the end all and be all of a long lasting fight with wood as a medium because let me tell you - we've never gotten along well at all.
So yeah... lots of work. Not kidding, at least 10 hours just carving the body from a laminated block with a sawzall and a grinder. Then all the filing, the sanding (up to 220) and the three coats of finish. Sorry the pics aren't that great (flash and all) I just want to SHOW this to people.
If anyone lives in the New Bedford area for AHA! Night the 14th of October the Star Store on Purchase St will be open and the Sculpture Club is having an Open House. This will be there. Please leave comments.
Steel and Wood, approx. 45" tall
PS. In the title, the -shunned- should be (shunned) but it wont let me. -.-;
Thanks. I love reductive work. This is the first time I have worked on this scale though so learned A LOT. I will probably do more reductive wood work. It's really fun.

It's really beautiful. I would love to be able to do that. If I get into a good collage, I want to minor or major in art depending on my grades witch are in the toilet now...

o.o; I think it's beautiful, work hours well spent. The grain and layers in the wood are pretty on their own, all shineyed up like that. I can't see the head too well, but the torso looks wonderful - drop dead gorgeous ^^ lol.
Now I'm sure you want everyone to get their own interpretation from this, but would you mind telling us your idea behind the sculpture?
The school I go to now is AWESOME because its a State school so its not rediculously over priced, but the Fine Art program is amazing! The teachers are awesome and the Fine Arts stuff if heavily based on the Figure which I love. Plus we have the most amazing facilities in a renovated Department Store. 85,000 sq. feet of art just in the town over. We've got like 3 walkin kilns and a few water kilns for ceramics (they also have a throwing room and other work shop areas), we have jewlery working, painting, bronze casting, printmaking (amazing facilities, some of the most state of the art), and of course Sclupture!! Each floor is dedicated to a section of the Fine Arts plus as a JUNIOR I have studio space. It's totally amazing. The best part is - its a University not just an art school. So there's a lot more diversity. Plus it's 10 min from the beach, 40 min from Providence and about an hour from Boston. I <3 it here! I can't believe I'm halfway done!

Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
